The religiosity gender gap in 14 diverse societies

Scholars of religion have long sought to explain the persistent finding that women tend report greater religiosity than men. However, size this “gender gap” may depend on measure employed, religious tradition being sampled, and socio-demographic factors. Here, we conduct a systematic cross-cultural investigation into prevalence of, explanations for, gender gap in 2,002 individuals from 14 diverse societies. While variation exists across societies, general indicate mental commitment (i.e., thinking worrying more about) their community’s moralistic god, frequent participation rituals for prayer. find extends beyond Christian world, no such difference was seen towards local gods, which men show commitment. Tentative support is provided relating differences lower formal education mentalizing among women, however an explanation gods remains elusive. Nevertheless, our data suggest moralizing some contemporary world religions, unlike deities traditions, evolved ways make them appealing women.
